The Best Used Cars Under $20,000 in 2026: What We'd Actually Buy
If you have $20,000 to spend on a used vehicle, you have a lot of options. But having a lot of options doesn't necessarily make shopping easier. There are plenty of cars, trucks and SUVs at this price point that look like a great deal until you dig into their reliability, maintenance history or common problems.
At Road Runner Auto, we're picky about what we buy for our inventory. We focus heavily on Toyota, Honda, Mazda, Subaru, Lexus and Acura because we've seen firsthand which vehicles tend to hold up well over time.
So, if we had $20,000 of our own money to spend on a used vehicle, what would we actually buy?
Here are some of our favorites.
1. Toyota Corolla
If your priority is reliability, it's hard to go wrong with a Toyota Corolla.
The Corolla isn't exciting, but that's part of the appeal. It's inexpensive to maintain, gets good fuel economy and has a reputation for lasting a very long time when properly maintained.
For a $20,000 budget, we'd look for a newer Corolla with a good maintenance history rather than automatically chasing the lowest-mileage example we could find.
The LE trim is particularly appealing for someone looking for a comfortable daily driver without paying for unnecessary extras.
Best for: Commuters, college students, first-time buyers and anyone who simply wants a dependable car.
2. Toyota Camry
If you need something larger and more comfortable than a Corolla, the Camry is one of our favorite used sedans.
A good Camry gives you a combination that's becoming increasingly difficult to find: reliability, comfort, reasonable fuel economy and relatively inexpensive maintenance.
There are some Camry years and powertrains we'd be more cautious about than others, though. Buying a used Camry doesn't mean every year is automatically a good choice.
That's why we always recommend looking at the specific year, engine, transmission and maintenance history before buying.
Best for: Families, commuters and buyers who want a comfortable sedan that can rack up serious mileage.
3. Toyota RAV4
The Toyota RAV4 is another vehicle we'd strongly consider with a $20,000 budget.
It's one of the most popular compact SUVs for a reason. There's plenty of room, they're generally easy to live with and Toyota has built an excellent reputation for long-term reliability.
You'll often pay a little more for a comparable RAV4 than you would for some competitors. But that's something we think is worth considering when you're buying a vehicle you plan to keep for years.
A well-maintained RAV4 with higher mileage can make more sense than a lower-mileage SUV with a questionable history.
Best for: Families, commuters and buyers who want a dependable SUV with good resale value.
4. Mazda CX-5
The Mazda CX-5 is one of our favorite alternatives to the traditional Toyota and Honda choices.
Why?
Because it actually feels good to drive.
The CX-5 has a more upscale interior than you might expect at this price point, handles well and generally has a more enjoyable driving experience than many competing compact SUVs.
It's also a great example of why we don't believe you have to choose between reliability and something enjoyable to drive.
Best for: Buyers who want an SUV that's practical but don't want something boring.
5. Honda CR-V
If you're looking for an SUV, the Honda CR-V deserves to be near the top of your list.
It's practical, comfortable, fuel-efficient and has plenty of room for passengers and cargo without being unnecessarily large.
One of the biggest advantages of the CR-V is how easy it is to live with. It's a great daily driver, a practical family vehicle and a solid choice for someone who wants an SUV without moving into a much larger vehicle.
For an Iowa buyer, we'd also pay attention to the condition underneath the vehicle. A vehicle that has spent years dealing with Midwest winters deserves a careful inspection for rust and corrosion.
Best for: Families, commuters and anyone wanting a practical compact SUV.
6. Toyota Avalon
If you want something more comfortable and upscale than a Camry, the Toyota Avalon is one of the best used-car values out there.
The Avalon was Toyota's larger sedan, and it was designed with comfort in mind. It's roomy, quiet and surprisingly well-equipped, while still benefiting from Toyota's reputation for long-term reliability.
They're also often overlooked by used-car shoppers, which can work in your favor. You can sometimes get a lot more car for your money compared with a similarly priced Camry or newer midsize sedan.
As always, we'd pay close attention to the specific year, maintenance history and condition. An Avalon that has been properly maintained can be an excellent high-mileage vehicle, but luxury features and a larger vehicle don't eliminate the need for routine maintenance.
Best for: Buyers who want a comfortable, roomy sedan with Toyota reliability without paying a premium for a newer luxury car.
7. Mazda3
The Mazda3 is another excellent choice for someone who doesn't need an SUV.
It's smaller than a Camry or Accord, but that's actually an advantage for some drivers. It's easy to park, inexpensive to operate and more fun to drive than many vehicles in its class.
The hatchback version also gives you a surprising amount of flexibility.
If you're shopping for a first car or a commuter and don't need a huge back seat, the Mazda3 is absolutely worth considering.
Best for: Young drivers, commuters and buyers who want something inexpensive and fun.
8. Subaru Outback
For drivers who deal with Iowa winters, the Subaru Outback is an obvious vehicle to consider.
Standard all-wheel drive, good ground clearance and a practical interior make the Outback especially appealing in the Midwest.
But there's an important caveat: not every used Outback is one we'd recommend buying.
Subaru has had different engines, transmissions and known issues across different generations. Maintenance history is extremely important.
With the right year and a well-maintained example, however, an Outback can be an excellent vehicle.
Best for: Iowa winters, outdoor enthusiasts and buyers who want an AWD vehicle with plenty of cargo space.
9. Toyota Highlander
If you need more room than a RAV4 or CR-V, we'd take a serious look at the Toyota Highlander.
The Highlander gives you three-row seating in many configurations without becoming as large and cumbersome as a full-size SUV.
They're also known for holding their value well, which means you may have to shop older or higher-mileage examples to stay under $20,000.
That's not necessarily a bad thing.
A well-maintained older Highlander can be a much better purchase than a newer SUV with a poor maintenance history.
Best for: Families who need three rows and want Toyota reliability.
10. Acura and Lexus
Don't automatically assume that a luxury vehicle is expensive to own.
Some older Lexus and Acura models can be excellent used-car purchases, particularly if they've been properly maintained.
Lexus is essentially Toyota's luxury brand, while Acura is Honda's luxury division. That doesn't mean maintenance is identical to a Corolla or Civic, but there are plenty of models where the underlying mechanical components have proven themselves over time.
The trick is finding the right vehicle.
A $19,000 luxury SUV with neglected maintenance can become a very expensive $19,000 vehicle. We'd much rather have a well-maintained Lexus with 120,000 miles than a neglected luxury vehicle with half the mileage.
What Matters More Than Mileage?
This is one of the biggest mistakes we see people make when shopping for a used car.
They find two similar vehicles:
Vehicle A: 75,000 miles, questionable history, several owners and minimal maintenance records.
Vehicle B: 120,000 miles, one or two owners, excellent maintenance history and a clean inspection.
Which one would we rather own?
Usually, Vehicle B.
Mileage matters, but it isn't the entire story. Maintenance history, accident history, mechanical condition, rust, previous use and the specific vehicle's reliability record can all matter just as much—or more.
Don't Just Shop by Price
A $17,000 used car isn't necessarily cheaper than a $19,000 used car.
If the $17,000 vehicle needs $3,000 in repairs shortly after you buy it, you've just turned it into a $20,000 vehicle.
That's why we recommend looking beyond the window sticker.
Look at the Carfax. Look at the maintenance history. Have the vehicle inspected. Research the specific year and powertrain. Look for rust underneath. And most importantly, buy the condition—not just the mileage.
What Would We Buy?
If we had $20,000 to spend on a used vehicle today, our shortlist would be pretty simple.
For a sedan, we'd look closely at a Toyota Corolla, Toyota Camry, Toyota Avalon, or Mazda3.
For an SUV, we'd start with the Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V and Mazda CX-5, then consider a Subaru Outback or Toyota Highlander depending on our needs.
And we'd always rather buy the right example of a slightly older vehicle than the wrong example of a newer one.
That's ultimately what used-car shopping comes down to.
There isn't one perfect used car for everyone. The best vehicle is the one that fits your budget, your needs and—most importantly—the condition of the specific vehicle you're buying.
