Why the Toyota Camry Has Earned Its Reputation as One of the Most Reliable Cars Ever Built

Since its U.S. debut in 1983, the Toyota Camry has become America's go-to midsize sedan. Built on a simple philosophy of reliability, comfort, and low ownership costs, the Camry has earned a reputation for routinely surpassing 200,000—and often 300,000—miles with proper maintenance.

One of the most discussed issues affects some 2012-2014 Camrys equipped with the 6-speed automatic transmission. These vehicles can develop torque converter shudder, typically felt as a vibration between 35-50 mph. Toyota released service bulletins and updated software to address many cases, but severe wear may require torque converter replacement. Fortunately, once repaired, these cars generally continue to provide excellent long-term reliability.

Earlier 2007-2011 Camrys with the 2.4L 2AZ-FE engine are also known for excessive oil consumption. Worn piston rings can allow the engine to burn oil between changes. Owners who regularly monitored oil levels often continued driving these vehicles for years, while neglected engines could suffer internal damage.

Outside of those well-known concerns, the Camry's track record is exceptional. Toyota's naturally aspirated engines, proven transmissions, affordable maintenance, and abundant parts availability make ownership simple and inexpensive. Insurance costs are typically reasonable, fuel economy is excellent, and repairs are rarely complex compared to many competitors.
